Carol Dougherty is Professor of Classical Studies at Wellesley College. The author of several books and articles on the literature, politics and history of mobility and settlement in archaic and classical Greece, my most recent book,Travel and Home in Homer and Contemporary Literature, was published by OUP in the Classical Presences series. My current research reads the figure the metic (metoikos) in Greek tragedy within the discourse of hospitality (working primarily with Derrida). My interest is not in using tragedy as evidence for Athenian attitudes or practices concerning foreigners but rather to argue that the figure of the metic functions discursively on the tragic stage, posing the question of the foreigner -- not what to do about the foreigner? but what questions or problems does the foreigner help Athenians ask about their newly democratic city?
