Thesis Title:
The nanny, a forgotten British export
Thesis Summary:
My thesis covers the introduction of the nanny as a professional in 1892 with the establishment of the Norland Institute until national qualification and training was rolled out in 1946. It was a controversial and ambiguous role set within the private sphere of a household facilitating a profession for gentlewomen as experts in the care of children. Training for this role was exclusively British for a significant period of time, creating a demand throughout the empire in recreating and replicating Britishness overseas at a time when children were regarded as a community asset, forming the future of the empire.
