My research examines the impact of adversity and crisis on apprenticeship in early modern London. Far-reaching crises, including climatic events, famine and war, are discussed alongside local and individual challenges, namely morbidity and business failure. Detailed consideration is given to two catastrophic events, the Great Plague of 1665-66 and the Great Fire of London. Both negative and fortuitous outcomes for the individuals and for the apprenticeship system as a whole are investigated.
