Research Summary and Profile

Research interests:
Law
Summary of research interests and expertise:

My socio-legal work is interdisciplinary, drawing on ethnographic and more recently archival methods. I am generally interested in activities that sit on the border between legality and illegality. My book Matching Organs with Donors: legality and kinship in transplants was published in 2012 by the University of Pennsylvania Press in their Contemporary Ethnography series.

Building on this earlier work on on medical regulation and professional norms, my current research explores the category of research integrity in different settings, mainly in the documentation of research regulation and research conduct adjudication, but also during live interactions. As part of this project I have been conducting ethnographic observations in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), an international charity assisting editors and publishers to handle allegations of research misconduct. I have my extended ethnographic methods to the study of documents, having turned my attention to the casework of the General Medical Council as well as Medical Research Council archives, going back to the mid-nineteenth century.

As part of this project I have produced a Background paper for the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
