01-Jan-2012	The Responsibility to Protect, Prosecute and Palliate: Complementary or Conflicting? The international community responds to mass atrocities and associated humanitarian crises in a number of ways with a number of different tools. These responses represent several sets of interrelated practices and norms, and they all derive in one way or another from the vast edifice of human rights and humanitarian norms. Yet, even though they are related, they may not be mutually reinforcing; instead, they may undermine each other. This presentation will examine the conundrums faced by policymakers and practitioners when deciding how to respond to a particular situation. 01-Jan-1900	Africa and the ICC: Identity, Power and the African Renaissance The African Union has become increasingly hostile towards the International Criminal Court, particularly in the wake of the ICC arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, although the public hostility masks deeper divisions among African countries. Indeed, evidence of arguments among African states and between Africa and Western countries over the proper functioning and scope of the ICC is indicative of a number of paradoxes and conflicts which have emerged as Africa reorients its identities and interests to embrace international human rights norms while also asserting itself on the global stage.
