Project summary:

The Prosopography of the Byzantine World (PBW) develops an analytical prosopography of the people identifiable as active in the Byzantine world. Since 2000 this effort has been focused on the 1025–1180 period.

PBW arose from another flagship Academy project, the Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire (PLRE), that covers the governing class of the Roman empire from 260 to 641.
PBW is now working with a new project to facilitate digitisation of the PLRE and thus provide the basis for future updating. We propose to mark this important development by renaming the project as Prosopography of the Later Roman and Byzantine Worlds (PLRBW), subject to the approval of the Academy.

The aim is to achieve, in close international cooperation, a complete run of prosopographies covering the Later Roman and Byzantine empires from 260 to 1453, meeting the highest technical standards and ensuring the maximum possible interoperability with other online resources.
