This is an extended essay of 14, 905 words and 44 plates on thestudies made by Yeats (in Ravenna in 1907, and in Sicilian churches monasteries and galleries in the company of Ezra Pound in 1925) of Byzantine mosaics. The efffects on irish book design, on his own poetry, and on the national reception of his work and that of Irish artists he influenced is discussed.
