PhD Topic:

Research: Karen Winslow is a PhD candidate at the Institute of English Studies. Karen completed an MPhil in Art History, Criticism and Conservation at Trinity College Dublin. Her PhD dissertation explores early twentieth-century European and American collectors of Islamic book art, including works commissioned or collected by Mughal rulers. The thesis aims to identify the inflexion point when elite collectors began to appreciate the unique qualities of Mughal art, no longer viewing it as an inferior, provincial offshoot of Persian art or as a subcategory of Indian art. Research interests include collectors, dealers, scholars, and other intermediaries involved in Western and Islamic manuscript collections.
