This PhD project will investigate the life of Emilia Casanova de Villaverde (1832-1897), a Cuban freedom fighter who spent most of her life exiled in New York City. Despite the distance, Emilia actively participated in the island’s battle for independence against Spain and concurrently advocated for an end to slavery in her homeland.
