 History of the British Civil Service, with special reference to the development of professionalism and the Home Office, 1848-1914.

The Home Office and immigration policy 1880-1914.

The Home Office and its system of inspection, 1848-1914

History of British universities with special reference to benefaction.

Project summary relevant to Fellowship:

 Overall project: a study of British Universities and their benefactors, mid-19th to mid-20th centuries.

Two spin-off projects relate to conferences that I have co-organised at the IHR: 1) 2014, The Utopian Universities: a fifty-year retrospective (with MIles Taylor); 2) 2017, History, Heritage and Ideology: universities and the commemorationof benefactors (with Lawrence Goldman).
